Whatever you want to call it!
Why online therapy?
You want to start counseling, but that’s not as easy as it sounds. Perhaps you live in Seattle or Tacoma and you just don’t have time to sit in traffic for an hour each way trying to get to a counseling appointment. Or you may live in rural areas like Ellensburg or Longview with fewer mental health resources and may not have a lot of choice when it comes to mental health services. Maybe you are just more comfortable attending counseling from the comfort of your own home.
Online Counseling may be the solution you’ve been looking for.
You want high quality, specialized counseling services, but you also need therapy that fits with your lifestyle. I understand. Online counseling services at PNW Psychological Wellness may be the answer you’ve been looking for. As a psychologist, I specialize in trauma recovery, relationship counseling, and anxiety management. Through the use of secure video chat, I’m able to offer you effective mental health services without all the hassle of coming into a counseling office.
Benefits to online therapy in Washington:
Find a great fit with a therapist, even if they’re not local. Online therapy increases your ability to access a therapist across the state. Maybe you live in a small town where all of the therapists specializing in what you want to work on are booked out for months; now you can simply search another city’s availability for a therapist.
Fit therapy into your work day. Many work schedules are flexible enough that people can engage in an hour-long session during the work day, so that they can actually just focus on relaxing when they do get home/are done with the work day.
Eliminate your commute. If you hate driving in traffic as much as I do, online therapy is a great way to avoid heavy and unpredictable traffic (and non-guaranteed convenient parking).
Accessibility for disability, illness, or chronic pain. From the comfort of your own space, you don’t have to risk spreading or contracting illness or going without items you need for pain management throughout the day.
No need to pay for childcare because of a therapy appointment. Many parents and couples are able to attend their appointments online without having to arrange care for their children.
The comfort of your home. You might have a pet who is a comforting presence that you couldn’t otherwise bring to a therapy office. You can use all of your own pillows and blankets without worries of germs. And you don’t have to leave the house when it’s down pouring rain and you hardly even want to get out of your pajamas.

FAQs
-
Telehealth existed well before the start of COVID-19. There is a ton of research that shows engaging in therapy through electronic formats (video and phone) can be just as effective as in-person therapy.
That said, telehealth is not for everyone. Those who are in severe crises and or/actively contemplating suicide should seek local, in-person supports.

As soon as anything happens online, there is some risk and no guarantee of complete confidentiality.
As a Board Certified Telehealth Professional (BCTP-II), I took extensive training in learning how to adapt in-person approaches to therapy online and taking extra precautions in confidentiality and security concerns.
I do everything on my end to ensure our appointments and your personal health information are kept safe and confidential (using HIPAA-compliant softwares, conducting our appointments in a private and secure space on my end). I can and will walk you through multiple steps of how you can on your end enhance safety and confidentiality practices.

You will need access to a desktop/laptop computer, tablet, or phone that has access to video and a microphone; a private and confidential space; and a strong internet connection for video sessions.
One of the most notable differences is that, compared to in-person sessions, we are only seeing parts of each other on camera. This means we might both miss some non-verbals but we can easily compensate for that by sharing more directly things we might be feeling or thinking.
